When you invest in a Futurae diamond, I want you to know exactly what you are buying. Not because I think you need convincing, but because I believe that kind of transparency is the foundation of a decision you will feel good about for decades.
The question I am asked most often is some version of: "But is it a real diamond?"
I understand why people ask. There is still a quietly persistent perception that lab-grown diamonds are adjacent to the real thing — a substitute, a compromise, something slightly less. I built Futurae specifically to answer that question, and the answer is unequivocally yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Not similar to one. Not inspired by one. Chemically, optically, and structurally identical to a diamond formed in the earth over billions of years.
Independent certification is how I prove that ~ not with my word, but with science.
Every Futurae piece ships with a Futurae authentication card: a documented record of the stone, its origin, and the jewellery it is set into. For diamonds of 1.0 carat and above, that is accompanied by a full grading report from the International Gemological Institute (IGI) issued before the stone ever reaches me. For smaller stones, IGI reports are available on request.
That threshold reflects standard industry practice. Across fine jewellery, full grading reports are typically issued for stones from around 1.0ct upward, with the economics of certification relative to stone value making it impractical for very small diamonds, regardless of the jeweller. The Futurae authentication card is the baseline assurance for every piece. The IGI report, where it exists, is the deeper layer.
What follows is a transparent account of what that certification process looks like, what an IGI report actually contains, and why independent grading is the most credible form of quality assurance available.
Why Independent Certification Matters
A diamond is one of the most difficult objects in the world to evaluate without specialist equipment. Two stones that look virtually identical to the naked eye can differ significantly in quality, and therefore in value, based on characteristics that are invisible without magnification, spectroscopic analysis, and trained gemological assessment.
Independent certification exists to solve that information gap. Before grading laboratories became the industry standard, buyers had no reliable way to verify what they were purchasing beyond the word of the seller. The result was a market defined by inconsistency, where the same stone could be described very differently depending on who was selling it.
The core purpose of a grading report is to transfer knowledge from the laboratory to the buyer, completely independent of the commercial transaction taking place between the seller and the purchaser.
That independence is everything. When IGI grades a Futurae diamond, they have no knowledge of my brand, my pricing, or the client who will eventually wear the piece. Their assessment is made purely on what the stone is. That is precisely what makes it credible and it is the standard I hold Futurae to.
For lab-grown diamonds specifically, certification does something additional. It confirms, through advanced spectroscopic analysis, that the stone shares the same carbon crystal structure as a diamond formed beneath the earth. This is not a visual assessment. It is a scientific one. And the result, every single time, is confirmation that a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond not a simulant, not a substitute, not a compromise.

Why I Chose IGI
I chose IGI (International Gemological Institute) as my certification partner for a specific reason: they continue to issue full 4Cs grading reports for lab-grown diamonds, applying the same instruments, the same standards, and the same depth of assessment used for mined stones.
That matters to me. You deserve the same quality of information regardless of how your diamond was created.
What IGI Assesses
An IGI grading report for a lab-grown diamond covers every dimension of quality:

Cut grade: for round brilliants, rated from Excellent to Poor, assessing how well the stone has been cut to interact with light

Colour grade: on the standard D-to-Z scale, from colourless (D) through to light yellow (Z)

Clarity grade: from Flawless (FL) through to Included (I3), assessing internal and surface characteristics under 10x magnification

For round brilliant cut diamonds, IGI also provides an overall cut grade that accounts for the stone's proportions, polish, and symmetry together. This is one of the most useful single indicators of how a diamond will perform visually and it is something I look at closely when selecting stones for Futurae.

Did you know about the laser inscription?
Every IGI-certified diamond receives a laser-inscribed report number on its girdle - which is the thin edge between the crown and pavilion of the stone. This number is invisible to the naked eye but readable under magnification, and it permanently ties the physical diamond to its documentation. It is the chain of custody that makes the report verifiable and the stone traceable.
When your Futurae piece arrives, the report number on the stone will match the number on the IGI certificate. That match is the proof.
What the Grading Process Actually Involves
Understanding what happens inside a grading laboratory demystifies the report considerably. Here is the process, from the moment a stone arrives at IGI to the moment the certificate is issued.
Step 1: Origin Verification
Before any quality assessment begins, IGI uses advanced spectroscopic analysis to confirm what the stone actually is. This involves exposing the diamond to specific wavelengths of light and reading how the stone responds at an atomic level.
What the analysis confirms is the stone's carbon crystal structure: the same tetrahedral lattice of carbon atoms that defines every diamond, whether grown in a laboratory or formed in the earth over billions of years. It also identifies the growth method, CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) or HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) which is recorded on the report. This is the step that answers the "real diamond" question definitively. The spectroscopic result is either a diamond or it is not. There is no grey area, no interpretation, no commercial influence on the outcome.
Step 2: Colour Grading
The stone is placed in a controlled lighting environment and compared against a master set of reference diamonds by a trained gemologist. Colour grading is conducted with the stone unmounted and face-down, to eliminate the visual effect of the cut and assess the body colour of the stone itself.
The result is a letter grade on the D-to-Z scale. For context, most Futurae diamonds fall in the D-to-F range, colourless, which represents the highest tier of the colour scale.
Step 3: Clarity Grading
The diamond is examined under 10x magnification to identify any internal characteristics (inclusions) or surface characteristics (blemishes). The gemologist maps these onto a plotting diagram that appears on the final report, showing the type, size, and location of any features within the stone.
Clarity grades range from Flawless (FL) ~ no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification through to Included (I3). Most Futurae diamonds are selected in the VS1 to VVS2 range, where any inclusions are minor and invisible to the naked eye.
Step 4: Cut Grading
For round brilliant diamonds, IGI measures the stone's proportions precisely, its table percentage, depth percentage, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle thickness and uses these to calculate a cut grade. Cut is the characteristic most directly within human control, and it has the greatest impact on how a diamond looks when worn.
An Excellent cut grade means the stone has been crafted to maximise the return of light through the crown, producing the brightness, fire, and scintillation that makes a diamond visually compelling.
Step 5: Report Issuance and Laser Inscription
Once all assessments are complete, the report is compiled and the stone receives its laser-inscribed girdle number. The report is then issued, and at that point, it belongs to the stone permanently, regardless of who owns it or where it travels.

The Section Most People Miss
Towards the bottom of every IGI lab-grown diamond report, there is a comments field that records the growth method: CVD or HPHT. This is the direct record of how your diamond was created — and it is the section that contextualises everything else on the report.
It is also where the spectroscopic origin confirmation is reflected. The fact that the stone is classified as laboratory-grown, rather than natural, is the result of that atomic-level analysis. It is not a downgrade. It is a description.
Verifying Your Report
Every IGI report can be verified directly on the IGI website using the report number. Enter the number and the full details of the certificate will appear, confirming that the report is genuine and that the stone in your possession matches the documentation.
I encourage every Futurae client to do this. Not because I think there is any doubt, but because that verification step is part of what ownership of a certified diamond means. You should be able to confirm, independently and at any time, exactly what you are wearing.
Certification as a Commitment, Not a Checkbox
I did not build Futurae around certification because it is a marketing requirement. I built it around certification because I think you deserve to know with scientific certainty, from a source that has nothing to gain from the outcome exactly what you are wearing.
The question underneath every "but is it real?" is really: am I compromising?
The answer is no. And the IGI report is the proof of that, issued by scientists who have never met me and have no interest in your purchase. That structural independence is precisely what makes it credible.
Every Futurae diamond we select is chosen with the same care I would apply to a piece I was making for myself. The certification process is the formal record of that.
